## Why Athens?

Athens is where Western civilization began — and it's having a serious modern renaissance. The Acropolis still towers over the city as it has for 2,500 years, but below it you'll find vibrant street art, buzzing rooftop bars, and some of the most underrated food in Europe.

## What to Do

### The Acropolis
Obviously. But visit at **opening time** (8am in summer) or late afternoon to avoid both crowds and heat. The Parthenon is jaw-dropping in person. Don't skip the **Acropolis Museum** at the base — it's one of the best museums in Europe.

### Plaka & Anafiotika
The oldest neighborhoods in Athens. **Plaka** has charming tavernas and shops, while **Anafiotika** — a cluster of whitewashed houses built by island workers — feels like stepping onto a Greek island without leaving the city.

### Food Culture
Greek food is comfort food perfection. Try **souvlaki** from a street stand, **moussaka** at a family taverna, and fresh **horiatiki** (Greek salad) everywhere. Hit the **Central Market** for an intense sensory experience.

### Rooftop Bars
Athens has some of the best rooftop bars in the world. Watching the sunset light up the Acropolis from a rooftop with a glass of wine is a core memory waiting to happen.

## Pro Tips

- Athens is **very walkable** but hilly. Comfortable shoes are non-negotiable.
- Use Athens as a base for **day trips** to Aegina, Hydra, or Cape Sounion.
- The best restaurants are **away from the tourist strip** on Adrianou Street.
- Tap water is drinkable and free at restaurants.
- Sunday mornings are the best time for a crowd-free Acropolis visit.
